What is meditation?
Meditation is a technique for working with the mind. If you think of the mind as a tool then the first step in putting it to use should be to examine it; then reflect on how it works and its possible uses; then put it to work as efficiently and effectively as you can. Meditation is a natural way of getting to know the mind so that we can investigate and understand how it works and then improve it through training. It takes a lot of practice to train the mind. How many years have you spent just basically letting your mind do what it wants to? Can you tell your mind ‘OK now, enough worry, just think happy thoughts – don’t wander off now’. Not me. Are you the mistress or master of your own mind?
What are the results of meditation?
The thing you will most notice after you have been doing meditation for a while (like at least a few weeks, or months) is a more stable, calmer mind. Because the basic technique is staying with just one mental object (the breath for example) this is what you learn how to do. If you are doing a math problem you will find you can ‘just do that’. The mind is able to focus and stay where you want it to be – it’s not jumping about, getting distracted all the time. It is a lot more content to just be with the way.
We will utilize various meditation methods, breath awareness, physical movement, sound vibration, acupressure and guided visualization to reach that Zen-like place within and remember the way to get back there whenever we need it as we go through our day to day lives.
You will experience a more stable, calm, clear and uncluttered mind, more emotional balance, clearing of tension from your physical body and a stronger connection to your spirit or soul. Meditation is a detoxification of the mind and emotions.

The team’s MRI scans documented for the very first time in medical history how meditation produced massive changes inside the brain’s gray matter. “Although the practice of meditation is associated with a sense of peacefulness and physical relaxation, practitioners have long claimed that meditation also provides cognitive and psychological benefits that persist throughout the day,” says study senior author Sara Lazar of the MGH Psychiatric Neuroimaging Research Program and a Harvard Medical School instructor in psychology. “This study demonstrates that changes in brain structure may underlie some of these reported improvements and that people are not just feeling better because they are spending time relaxing.”
“Participant-reported reductions in stress also were correlated with decreased gray-matter density in the amygdala, which is known to play an important role in anxiety and stress. “It is fascinating to see the brain’s plasticity and that, by practicing meditation, we can play an active role in changing the brain and can increase our well-being and quality of life.”
“Meditation is a technique for working with the mind. The mind is a tool that we must put into use effectively and efficiently in our daily lives. Very simple meditation is like resting. All day you are processing information, sounds, smells, feelings, etc. and your mind needs a break.”–Katherine
